McCall, Idaho – Skiing, Emotional Breakdowns and PIZZA!

by sara on January 7, 2011

The drive to McCall, Idaho from Boise was ridonkadonk.  Everything was picturesque.  There were somewhat icy, windy mountain roads though so it was kind of dangerous to slam on the brakes for a photo op.  We risked it for the one below.

On our way to the cabin we drove past this pizza place which Nicole announced would be our dinner destination after an afternoon of skiing.  Yes please!

So, let me tell you about my skiing experience first before I pizzagarbl.  I went skiing with a friend when I was 8 years old in Crested Butte, Colorado.  I remember taking lessons and drinking hot chocolate.  I don’t even remember what the snow looked like.  I’m pretty sure I didn’t legitimately ski.  However, I’ve never really been afraid to try anything so I was honestly pretty excited to try it out again.  We headed to Brundage Mountain where we ate a quick bite then hit up the bunny slope.  After first putting on my skis, I fell down a small embankment and couldn’t get up.  First panic attack.  Jason had to pull me up.  It didn’t help that there were 3 year olds doing backflips down the bunny slope in front of me.  A few trips down the bunny slope myself and I felt like I had a grip on it.  Let’s shoot for the green.  I’ll spare you all the details but let’s just say there was crying, hyperventilating, a near break-up, skis thrown, flailing arms, prayers said, countless motivational speeches, hot tempers and needless to say…panic attack #2.  I can’t tell you how happy I was when I read this post by Anne.  That combined with the fact that Nicole and Jason’s dad’s girlfriend both said they were willing to pay someone to take them down the hill in a snowplow.  I can honestly say I’ve never been that non-confident in my life.  It really was mental too.  Jason has vowed never to go skiing with me again but I think I would give it another whirl.  Can’t nobody break my pride, can’t nobody hold me down.  Oh no.  I got to keep on skiing.

More bad news.  I started to feel sick after skiing.  Flu sick.  Oh noes.  Nothing a little pizza can’t fix right?  As promised, we headed to Toll Station for dinner.

We started off with their awesome salad bar.  Middle of nowhere Idaho and they have fresh edamame and beets!  You can’t beet that!  Bu-dum-chiii.  Nicole is already famous by Boise standards but now she has officially made her Foodgarbl premiere!  Congrats Nicole!

Celery, cauliflower, sunflower seeds, cabbage…what more could an emotionally-challenged-after-day-of-skiing girl ask for?!

To warm my soul even more, I ordered the spaghetti with marinara.  Once again, I wouldn’t have expected to have the bomb spaghetti in McCall, Idaho of all places but this bowl of pasta gave me renewed faith.

The rest of the crew ordered pizza and beer (and grew their hair out like Steve Nash).  Look how gorgeous the pizza looks:

Thank you again, Nicole, for your gracious action shot:

Oh look it’s a picture of the mountain that tested every ounce of willpower I had!  How adorable!

After dinner we headed to Nicole’s boyfriend’s family’s cabin where he graciously allowed us to stay for a few days.  Cabin post to come…

I’m telling you I had that EXACT same experience boarding this past Thanksgiving – and I’ve gone more than a few times the last 2 years. I think I’m just not cut out for sliding down a mountain. That pizza looks rull good too! Hi Jason’s sister!
