Well, I really didn’t think it could happen but the interstate pants gang has struck again. My grandmother suffers from dementia and is convinced that there is a gang of people that sneaks into her room at night when she’s sleeping and steals her pants. They don’t steal her flat screen tv or her fresh pair of kicks, they’re in it for the pants. You know the kind:

Sought After Pants

The closest I’ve been to a memory related illness before this was reading The Notebook. Dementia is sad business. We have to find a little humor in it otherwise it would be completely miserable and depressing with every visit. We had a good visit tonight despite the fact that we had to narrow down exactly what size the pants gang was after.

Yesterday was an epic fail if you look at it from the standpoint of getting a jump on the day. We didn’t exactly make it to the lake by 7am as planned. However, we ran a bunch of errands, hit up a late lunch at Baker Bros with a coupon (two huge salads for only $7!) and then headed to White Rock around 7pm for a night ride. It was my first time to wear the diaper shorts:

Shake it fast but watch yourself.

Not recommended for loungewear.

Believe it or not, I couldn’t even tell how obnoxious they were once we started riding. And I do think they help when you’re on the bike for hours at a time. We made it around the lake 3 times in 2 hours for a little over 27 miles. We wanted to get another hour of riding in but it was getting really dark and we were getting pelted by bugs every few seconds. We straight up dominated the ride though. It was my first time to use the shoes that clip into the pedals and it was like my feet were on crack. I can go so much faster! The first time we stopped for a water break I forgot about my shoes being clipped in and just as I was about to fall over Jason yelled “SHOES!” so I unclipped at the last minute saving my pretty mug from a disastrous face plant.

I wore gloves in honor of Michael Jackson. And his son Blanket.

Did I mention that I did a Jillian Michael’s No More Trouble Zones before I went on the bike ride yesterday? Yeah, my body is mad at me right now. I am every bit as sore today as I was after the half marathon but I’m so glad I’ve found a new challenging way to exercise.

Today was pretty uneventful in the way of food. We had Great American Hero for lunch (#7 turkey with avocado on wheat, add lettuce oil and vinegar). They have a ginormous menu, a super friendly staff and a dang good sandwich.

Forgot to take a pic of my sandwich. Sowwy.

Dinner was a veggie burger and some guacamole made by the house chef. I don’t pay him or anything but sometimes I do his laundry without shrinking anything so it’s a fair trade.

Forgot to take a picture of the guacamole. Sowwy.

Tomorrow is going to be awesome. Know why? Because I get my intro to Sharepoint book from Amazon!!! Sometimes your life is just clicking on all cylinders, you know?

Buca di Beppo
8580 State Highway 121
Frisco, TX 75034

Okay I know Buca di Beppo is a chain restaurant. And I know sometimes waitstaff can be overly excited or clearly lacking in social skills at chain restaurants. Tonight’s visit to Buca di Beppo was no exception. The host asked us if it was our first time to dine there and I told him “no” but he still proceeded to tell me about their kitchen and how often they bake bread and how it is the perfect place to throw a birthday party. Since he didn’t listen to me I then wanted to tell him about my struggle with finding the perfect running bra, how I once made ice cream using only frozen bananas and why I think the Situation’s new rap song might have a chance.

Fast forward to our waiter. I think he spotted our coupon early on and almost instantaneously started moving at a slower pace. Either that or his acapella skills were in high demand with the 8,000 birthday parties going on in every room. They weren’t kidding about celebrating at Buca’s.

"It looks like the oil spill!" - our waiter (way too soon, buddy)

We were not there to celebrate tonight. It was strictly bidness in the form of carb loading. We are getting up at the crack of dawn tomorrow to head to White Rock to ride some laps. The goal is to ride 5 times around the lake for a total distance of 45 miles. Since I am terrible with math and Jason can’t focus for longer than 4 minutes at a time, we’re going to take an article of clothing off for each lap we finish and throw it at someone we think looks homeless. Then when we get down to our skivvies, we’ll know we’re done. And by skivvies I obviously mean padded bike shorts.

Wine bottle ceiling and pictures of nuns everywhere. Like church, only different.

Our carb loading included the Apple Gorgonzola Salad and Penne San Remo. The salad had walnuts and dried cranberries mixed in and could have easily been my entree. However, you can’t just wave artichoke hearts, peas and penne pasta in a cream sauce in front of me and expect me to just sit there and drool. Both shared dishes were good. Not out of this world, but good. The meal hit the spot and I have a pasta belly ready for flattening tomorrow.

They serve with real tongs! How bout them apples! Litrolly!

Hi

While we were eating dinner we heard our waiter tell the kids at the table next to us that Buca di Beppo was now owned by Planet Hollywood and that they changed their menu to be geared more towards “celebrities.” All this time I thought celebrities liked iced coffee and fro-yo but apparently they like mounds of whipped cream shoved in a bowl doused with sprinkles and topped with a cherry and mint sprig.

Family size portions of pasta, bread and cream sauce. Followed by a colossal dessert. But why is America fat?

It is very obvious that Buca is trying to become something of a banquet hall. I think their end goal is to have every single table filled with at least one birthday guest. Our waiter was missing for at least 20 minutes to attend Happy Birthday serenades throughout the restaurant. I tipped him extra because he seemed to be having trouble breathing. I’d go back here if I had another coupon. But I’d keep it hidden until I get the bill.

Wait til you see my padded bike shorts! (hotness)

Jason and I signed up for Shammies ‘n Koozies a few weekends ago only to find out the day before we were going to leave that it was canceled due to flooding. We had major sad pouty face. Shammies ‘n Koozies is a 45 or 65 mile bike ride through the hill country ending at the Guadalupe River where we then float down the river for a couple hours. It has been rescheduled for August 7th so we plan on being able to ride the 65 mile option by then. Since we missed the ride a few weeks ago, we decided to do the Susan B Komen 5k instead. We signed up the morning of the race so we didn’t get a chip timer but we started a few minutes behind the chipped timers and still finished with the first pack of runners. The perk to finishing first? The free swag afterward. There were about 3 times more sponsors than the Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon. And they were not shy about giving things away. Here is just a random sampling of what I took home:

3.1 miles for 3.1 shirts? Deal

What you don’t see pictured here are the 20 coupons we got for free Chik-Fil-A sandwiches and La Madelaine desserts. Dunkin Donuts was giving away free iced coffee, Alcatel gave away bags, Frito Lay gave away Sun Chips, Paciugo was serving up gelato and even Mickey D’s was handing out apple slices. It’s nice to see so much corporate support for boobies.

In other news, the puppies are still cute:

Jason and my Dad finally got Korean haircuts together:

I had a little car trouble:

and the Italian Giggle was captured on camera:

The Dallas heat is killing me and my productivity level in the afternoon. This morning Jason rode 33 miles on a group bike ride and I ran the dogs 5 miles just before it broke into the 90′s. 7 iced drinks later and I’m still thirsty. More garbl’s coming this weekend! I’d like to give you my thoughts on Cane Rosso pizza and the Taco Joint so stay tuned.

AZN food FTW!! I love using acronyms my parents don’t understand. They’ll read Foodgarbl and say “I didn’t get it.” I use times like that to bond with them and catch them up to 2010. Except it can get kind of awkward like when I had to explain “MILF” to my dad after he heard it on Jay Leno. I was all OMG!

Any damn way, we finally branched out at lunch yesterday and didn’t go to Baker Brothers or Cafe Express for the 8,000,000th time!! Instead, we hopped in a borrowed minivan and hit up Vietnam near downtown.

I’m a n00b and forgot to take pictures so I’ll have to let the words do the talking. We walked in and you would have thought my Asian co-worker was Miley Cyrus. The whole place went bananas. Apparently she’s been there a lot and they think she is the hottest thing since pork roll. So we all strolled in with a little extra swagga being with a celebrity and all. They put us at the corner table in the back room (where they probably put all the famous people that come to Dallas) and immediately took our drink order. We had a rookie at the table who had never had Vietnamese food before. One look and you could tell she might pho cup if we didn’t help her. The celebrity recommended the pho with cooked beef. SHE LOVED IT. Winner!!! I had the pho with tofu and with the added vegetation of cilantro, bean sprouts, jalapenos, thai basil and sriracha sauce it was out of ferkin control. Best of all – the added foliage is free! I can’t even remember what the celebrity ordered because I was still in awe of her badass minivan and I was trying really hard not to tard out because we had a manager with us. Sara on her best behavior = sweating, nervous tick, tourettes comments like “I know she looks like Barney!” out of the blue, randomly staring at things like aquariums or bald heads, and saying 4 Hail Mary’s in the hopes that I keep my job another day. The lunch was an overall success and it was cheap as hell, dawg.

If you’ve been keeping up with your daily Garbl, you’ll know that we are trying to give you money saving tips for these trying times (THANKS LAURA BUSH). So hit up Vietnam Restaurant next time you’re downtown and grab some pho or the buffet for under $8. You’ll feel like you went to Golden Corral in Saigon.

Other money saving tips:

Eat at car dealerships on the weekend. Many of them offer free hot dogs and sodas if you test drive a car. The Cadillac dealerships even had bar-b-q catered a few times. I’m a classy gal and this is how I roll. Get used to it.

Wait until your co-workers go to meetings then check their lunch in the fridge. If you work at a big enough company with multiple refrigerators you can typically get away with taking a sandwich or apple here and there. If you get caught just say it looked EXACTLY like the lunch you brought. “I know I can’t believe you use homemade pumpernickel bread too!”

Go to Sam’s or Costco on Sunday afternoon for lunch. Don’t buy anything while you’re there because NO ONE needs to buy 8lbs of frozen tilapia. Just push a cart around while taking samples of the food. If you really like something, ask the person if they know where you can find the applesauce and point down the aisle. When they turn around, take the tray and dump it in your purse/murse.

Visit nursing homes. Lunch is at noon and dinner is at 5. My grandmother never finishes what is on her plate. But I do! Plus you get to hear cool stories about farms and dust bowls.

Borrow from neighbors. Used to be standard to borrow a cup of sugar from a neighbor if you needed to make some cookies and ran out. Times have changed. Borrow 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts, a package of spring mix and a pint of ice cream. Tell them you’ll repay them and then make plans to move soon.

Can’t afford plates or silverware that doesn’t snap and scare you when you try to eat something slightly denser than a grape? Well FOODGARBL: Austin is here to save the day once again! It’s called a free lunch (in a f-ing box)!

Next time you’re hungry and you’re like “damn, I got no money because Erica spent it all up on Tang and air freshener,” come on by some Education Symposium thing at a big corporate campus somewhere. Sure, there is supposed to be a registration fee, but there are several ways around that. I suggest:

act confused until it gets annoying and obvoius that you’re no longer confused and they let you in

say you already paid and keep repeating this until it’s so annoying they let you in

just run past the registration table and see if they are too lazy to chase you down

tell the people at the registration table you are gay and here with the media. and then when they’re like, “what?”, you be like, “I didn’t say gay.”

try to pay the registration fee with a tiny amount of foreign currency and then promise to get the rest from your Russian business partner in Houston or some shit

fake a seizure (this works for EVERYTHING/ANYTHING)

Once you get inside the symposium, it’s box lunches galore! These little treasure chests are full of recession-proof gold, like sandwiches, chips, drank and fruit (I didn’t say gay). Sometimes the sandwiches are soggy or smell weird, but that should remind you of something Gandhi said, “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind, soggy and weird-smelling.”

So, if you’re interested in getting the 4 main food groups in one meal (soggy bread, warm condiment, meat thing and fruity paste), consider attending a conference, symposium or board meeting. The boxed lunch concept is like a tiny, caged buffet. It’s a cute little hidden meal that stacks up nicely like bricks in a prison.

For regular FOODGARBL: Austin readers, let us know if you’ve ever had a good one. We might publish your story on the site! Until then, we leave you with this …

“Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to eat lunch out of a shoebox.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Attention Central Texas: the following is a genius recession-busting tip!

The Austin-based sandwich chain, Thundercloud Subs also goes by another name … Makes Subs With a Fist. Not since John Stamos and Sacagawea hooked up at that first Pilgrims/Indians networking event has there been such an honest recreation of the First Thanksgiving. FOODGARBL Austin went totally supper for lunch today and decided to try Thundercloud Subs for the 503rd time. It was almost exactly like that first blessed meal of fellowship: I was literally starving, there were men with long braids, we got there using horsepower and turkey was served.

Believe me, I know it sounds crazy, but after 502 chances Thundercloud did not disappoint. Their freaking sandwiches are so good that when I order at the counter, it feels the same as scoring some crack rock under the bridge at 5th and I-35. Or so I’m told. My only words of wisdom prior to ordering are: don’t call it a sandwich. It’s a sub. Just like the staff on a cruise ship, the Thundercloud employees will make you sing karaoke if you call it a boat. Huh?

We apologize (no we don’t) for the lack of advice on Thundercloud’s menu selection, but everything on there is just so ass-slapping good you don’t need advice. Seriously, you can’t lose. I think I’ve eaten their sliced possum sub with charcoal shavings and Korean cabbage stuffing and the shit was delicious!! They could probably even convince me to order the secret sub that’s not even on the menu … the Donkey Drool Club with spicy Right Guard mayo on 12 grain inbread. I guarantee you I’d like it.

Just check out that sub and tell me it doesn’t make you want to meet Squanto and the gang down at the T-Cloud Subs on Riverside for a Tejas Tuna. I’m so thankful for the two turkey-tracing hands I’m going to use to grab that bountiful cornucopia and force-feed myself a healthy harvest. Did I mention a bag of thinly sliced baked maize pieces and a paper pulp container of flavored bubble water for very little barter or shell currency??

I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but here in Austin, we’ve had a bit of an 18 month economic hiccup. It’s like we ate too much economic prosperity and then had some unemployment gurgle up from the stomach bank. People keep calling it a recess-ion, but I’m not sure what it has to do with 15 minutes of playtime around mid-morning. It’s more like a mid-afternoon bully pulling your non-farm payroll pants down and giving you a Turbo Tax titty twister.

Sure, it’s bad as hell in Austin, but I’ve heard it’s even worse in other places around the country. We’re paying an extra $.15 for sauce at Taco Deli; people in Detroit are saving their bullets for opening soup cans. We’re having to look for things on sale at Whole Foods; people in Cleveland are using Cavs jerseys for diapers. We’re riding bikes to Alamo Drafthouse; people in Los Angeles are paying Avatar prices to see Back to the Future III. I told you, it’s BAD (RIP Michael).

So, what do you do when the whole world starts eating Ramen and Fanta for breakfast??! You wake up your FOODGARBL Austin editor, who Rip-Van-Winkled through some of the hardest restaurant industry times in the past 100 years!! FUCK SALT!!

If you are still wealthy enough to afford Internet or smart phone access, stay tuned to FOODGARBL for fancy tips on how to survive what’s left of the recession (that Bush intentionally started and Obama refuses to finish). This includes tips on eating cheap, digesting expired foods, using quintuple coupon deals on existing sale items, eating out in style when you already have more than $15k in credit card debt and stealing bread to feed your family! I guarantee you, you won’t want to miss this invaluable information – while you can still make 51% or more of your monthly mortgage payment.

So yeah, kind of turned 29 since I last garbl’d. I don’t know where I’ve been the last few years because last time I checked I was 24. I never really had a plan for when I got older like I want to be married by 26, have at least 4 kids by 27, start a financial planning business for toddlers by 28, visit the pyramids by 29, retire at 30, etc. But I turned 29 and I was like WHAT IN THE NAME OF RICKI LAKE HAVE I DONE WITH MYSELF? I have a good job, the most perfect guy I could ever wish for, a ballin whip nearly paid off, 3 of the most adorable monster puppy faces, and yet I still felt empty.

I litrolly had myself a little mid life crisis. At 29. So I did what any normal person would do in my situation and sat down on the couch with a bag of pretzels and ate the whole thing. I wish I could tell you that I got it all figured out and I now have a master plan but it was more of a wake up call. Fact: I bought a book from the self help section of Barnes and Noble last weekend. Don’t judge me. Heather Bakes read The Happiness Project and her baby is adorable so I figured maybe it would help me too (minus the baby part, for now). I also got a Raw Vegan cookbook. I’m either becoming a GIANT HIPPIE or I need to stop reading food blogs.

All that aging drama aside, Jason and I successfully ran the Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon in Dallas a few weekends ago!!

Jason started running with me this past year when he realized the benefits: knee pain, increased laundry, blisters, shin splints and swampass. We picked the Dallas race because we love staycations and we could count on the weather being nice. I was afraid of how we would fare since the longest training run we did was just over 9 miles at White Rock the weekend before but we ran it right at 2 hours with a couple stops for water (and to pump up our Reeboks). You know, the greatest adrenaline rush we got was from the random spectators cheering us on from the sideline. They were impressed with what we were doing and that made us feel so awesome. We especially liked the guy that held up a sign that said “Run like Tiger’s wife is chasing you.” It was also pretty sweet to be running all over Dallas when normally we’d be driving around the same streets polluting the city so we can go to the Dollar Tree to save $.30 on Mop ‘n Glo. The route was pretty scenic and took us from City Hall through Downtown through Highland Park up Mockingbird to Skillman over to historic Swiss Avenue and ended at the Cotton Bowl. The feeling we got crossing the finish line is indescribable. Not only because we had just run through the ghetto unscathed, but because we accomplished our goal! Jason is still cussing me because his legs aren’t back to normal but I can’t wait to run another one.

All that boring running bragging aside, let’s talk about food! Here’s a restaurant I’ve been meaning to Garbl forever but have been SO BUSY with SO MUCH STUFF like NOT DOING MY TAXES and VACUUMING and ALL THAT.

Kenny’s Burger Joint
1377 Legacy Drive
Suite 120
Frisco, Texas 75034

You’ve probably already heard of Kenny’s Wood Fired Grill in Addison. I guess Kenny’s Burger Joint in Frisco could be considered its caj younger sibling. I’ve been there 3 times now and cannot bring myself to order anything besides the ahi tuna burger because it is INCREDIBLE.

Aha! Ahi! I see! Said the blind man as he picked up the hammer and saw.

They serve it with wasabi mayonnaise on a ciabatta bun and it tastes like Christmas morning. Their menu is a la carte so if you want fries or another burger as your side, you have to order it separate. I wish I could say I love everything about this place because their ahi tuna burger is SO GOOD but I didn’t like their regular fries with Kenny’s secret seasoning (so secretive!) or their white queso.

Plain Jane Fries. Remind me not to name my kid Jane. Or Snooki.

I didn’t like the texture or taste of the fries (I’m a sweet potato fry fan though so don’t trust my opinion) and the queso was way too rich. Instead of “Bud’s Queso” it should be “Birdman Feat. Lil Wayne Queso.” Jason got the cajones to order one of the Adult Milkshakes last time we went. In true Jersey Shore spirit, he chose the “Attitude Changer” with Stoli vanilla, chocolate liquor, Oreos and Vanilla Ice Cream. For $6.99 it isn’t exactly a bargain but it is a great way to end the meal with dessert…krunk style.

So here’s the recap of Kenny’s Burger Joint: If you live anywhere near Frisco, you must go try the ahi tuna burger. Or if you can sleep at night knowing you’ve slaughtered a cow, go ahead and get a regular burger because I hear those are good too.

On a completely unrelated note, I got my brother a sauna suit for Christmas from Ross and I just realized he never even sent me a thank you note.

I have so much to Garbl but I smell like the Trinity River after my run so I need to shower and get ready for a kickass day at work tomorrow. Everyone is going to be at the Rangers home opener so guess what that means?!?!? CHAIR RACES!!!!!!!!!!!! And STAPLER SWAPPING! AND RAP TURNED UP SO LOUD THE WINDOWS SHAKE LIKE BOOM BOOM BOOM! I was built for corporate America.

I just witnessed an apartment couple breakup so I’m a little emotional. It was kind of sad because it was obvious the guy wanted to peel out for dramatic effect after the girl slammed the car door but he was in an awkward spot on the street so he had to settle for a 4 point turn. Breakup FAIL. When Jason and I fight at least we throw things that shatter. Anyways, we were on our warm-up walk to the community gym to get swolled when all this action occurred. We’ve been running a bunch lately but we both decided we wanted to incorporate weights into the workout routine. I’ve never been one to go to the gym to work out and tonight reminded me why I don’t like to go. It smelled like cat pee, there was a schizo singing to herself on the treadmill and we had to wait on Crackerjack and Rockstar to stop staring at themselves in the mirror so they would get off the machine. Oh and I don’t know what the heck I’m doing. I probably would like it a lot more if I had a trainer to SHOW ME what to do and when to stop. But I don’t so now I’m sore. Hey at least I pretended to know what I was doing.

Like most days, I woke up this morning thinking about lunch. I wanted to get to work and bust my butt to get things done so I could go out for something amazing. You ready for the wrench in that plan? One of my teammates, recently promoted to manager, kind of a big deal, was being all needy and wanted someone to take him to birthday lunch. Can’t these people just be happy with what their wife packs in their lunch pail? We wanted him to have his special day though so we told him to pick where he wanted to eat. Anywhere is fine with us! This is going to be awesome! Birthday lunch somewhere amazing! So we go to Chipotle. WTF?

Needless to say, lunch didn’t hit the spot for me. I wanted a fun dinner so we decided to do breakfast. Feeling the sudden urge to go green, I stopped by Tom Thumb on the way home and picked up some tomatillos, green pepper and celery. Whipped up some tomatillo salsa by boiling the tomatillos for five minutes then throwing their crazy ass in the Vitamix with some agave nectar and Sriracha sauce. Chopped up the green pepper and threw it in with the huevos. Celery was used for bumps on a log minus the bumps. Then of course we had to have our dose of Kodiak pancakes.

Yeah I already had pancakes but I’m a professional eater and I still wanted something after our huge intense post emotional breakup workout. My options? Skinny cow ice cream sandwich or a honeycrisp apple. I’m tempted to leave you hanging and not tell you what I picked until tomorrow but I can’t do that to my loyal readers. All two of you. I picked the apple. LOUD APPLAUSE! I might have the ice cream sandwich for breakfast though.

2:45am! Getting awfully close to my bedtime! We didn’t watch the 2 hr Jersey Shore special tonight (DO NOT tell me what happened to Snickers) so I can’t wait to get home tomorrow and have a watch party. Also have to take down all the Christmas decorations. Boo Enzo peed all over our light up Christmas displays so I have to hurry up and put those on Craigslist too. Kbye!
